Amy Scott-Douglass PhD

Amy Scott-Douglass PhD, age 54, of Huron, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2024 after a struggle with cancer. The youngest child of Gordon and Norma Schaechterle, Amy was a devoted teacher, scholar, mother to several pugs, and beloved friend and mentor to many students and friends.
Amy leaves behind hundreds of students, scholars, and readers who were touched by her brilliance and light. Author of Shakespeare Inside: The Bard Behind Bars, she devoted her life to bring ideas and art to the brightest possible audience, elevating the empathy and intellect of all she touched. An award-winning teacher, she was currently an associate professor of English at Lorain County Community College. Previously she served as faculty to California State University Fullerton, Denison University, Georgetown University, and Marymount University, where she directed the Graduate Program in English and the Humanities. A true Renaissance woman, she loved Shakespeare, travel, friendship, and theater, as well as home renovation, design, and dogs. She was passionate about exposing students to early modern literature and drama, and taught a wide variety of literature and humanities courses ranging from 17th century women authors to graphic novels on film. Her research interests centered on early modern literature and adaptation, covering topics ranging from children’s editions of Shakespeare to colorblind casting in contemporary television adaptations of Shakespeare. A natural teacher and explorer, she would patiently explain to friends how to conduct basic home repairs and impressing professional contractors with her knowledge of home renovation and historic preservation.
Amy is survived by her mother and three siblings and is preceded in death by her father, her sister, and her beloved pugs, Hector and Hamlet. She leaves behind a host of grieving nieces and nephews, friends, current and former students, and two pug dog children, Sissy and Hero.
A celebration of Amy’s life will be held for close family at a later date.
