Richard Henry "Dick" Mahl

Richard Henry “Dick” Mahl, age 88, of Norwalk, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2024, at Stein Hospice Care Center.
Richard was born August 20, 1936, in Norwalk to the late Alphonse and Lucille (Fries) Mahl. He was a 1954 graduate of Townsend-Wakeman High School, and a veteran of the US Army serving overseas in Germany from 1954 to 1956. Richard spent much of his life as a farmer with his brother Jerry; together they were known as the Mahl Brothers. Their farms, on the east side of Norwalk were best identified by the historic homestead, formerly the Blue Fly Inn, located on the corner of Rt 18 & Greenwich-Milan Road, which served as the Mahl Family residence & cornerstone for over a century.
Dick wore many other hats and was very active in the community. In addition to farming, he served as Townsend Township Trustee for over 20 years, and a rural US mail carrier for over 30 years. In ‘retirement’ he joined Champion Tire & Wheel in North Carolina. During his 20 year service there, he acquired his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to help transport the Champion tractor-trailers to the NASCAR races.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Elaine (Mainzer) Mahl; Sons, David (Marian Lane) Mahl, Kevin (Michelle Burke) Mahl, Sister, Janet (David) Hostetler, Grandchildren, Alexander Mahl, Kaitlyn Mahl, Madelyn (Aldo) DeLeon, Erika (Matthew) Rouse, and Lucille Mahl, along with numerous nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alphonse & Lucille, and brother Gerald Mahl.
Visitation for family and friends will be held Sunday, September 22, 2024 from 4:00 – 6:00 P.M. at the Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main Street, Norwalk.
A funeral Mass will be held Monday, September 23, 2024, at 10:30 A.M. At St. Paul Catholic Church, 91 E. Main Street, Norwalk with Father Jim Brown officiating. Military Honors will conclude the service, followed by a luncheon. Private interment will be held at a later date in St. Paul Cemetery.
