T J Gerth

Thomas James Gerth, age 85, of Vermilion and formerly Norwalk, passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain.
He was born July 10, 1936 in Avon Lake, OH to the late Fred and Ruth (Thomas) Gerth. He served in the US Army from 1953 until 1957 in England during the Korean War. He was a commercial pilot, instrument flight instructor on multi-engine planes for 20 years. He was a mechanical engineer with Ford Motor Co. for 34 years, retiring in 1993. He was a diesel mechanic all his adult life and enjoyed scuba diving for over 20 years. He was a licensed boat captain mariner from the Great Lakes to Florida the past many years. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, watching hummingbirds, spending time outdoors, and hunting antelope and deer.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Kosarik) Gerth to whom he married in 1993; a daughter, Julie Gerth of Vermilion; granddaughters, Rachel Tokmenko and Meagan Nickeson; great-granddaughter, Brooke Nava; and great-grandsons, Zakary Nickeson and Christian Nickeson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Nancy and Joan.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at the Amvets Post 22, 1517 State Route 60, Vermilion, OH, 44089 on Sunday, August 29, 2021 from 12:00 Noon – 3:00 P.M. Arrangements entrusted to the Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main Street, Norwalk.
