Thomas H Freeman
December 24, 2020
Thomas H Freeman, 73, Norwalk died Thursday, December 24, 2020, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, after contracting Covid-19.
Tom made a surprise entrance into the world on July 23,1947, when he was born to Bernard and Jeannette Freeman at Norwalk Memorial Hospital. The doctor was leaving the delivery room after the birth of Tom's sister when the nurse cried, “Wait, doctor! There's another one!”
Tom graduated from Norwalk High School in 1965 and attended Miami University. He graduated from Ashland University in 1970. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Okinawa, from 1970 to 1972.
Tom received his J.D. degree from Ohio Northern University School of Law in 1975 and joined his father, Bernard, his uncle Herbert Freeman, and his brother, Harold, in the practice of law at Freeman and Freeman in Norwalk. He was a member of the Huron County Bar Association and served a term as president.
Tom had a lifelong love of music. He played in the Norwalk High School band, orchestra, and pep band. He and his friends also formed a jug band that performed for school and community events. As a young teenager, he wanted to play the banjo but couldn't afford one, so he built his own and taught himself to play it.
He described himself as “an amateur musician who has been an old-time music enthusiast since 1960," the year he first heard the folk music revivalists The New Lost City Ramblers. Throughout his life he continued to play and transcribe music for guitar, fiddle, banjo, and mandolin.
Tom was known for his wry sense of humor and was always a jokester. He enjoyed drawing and cartooning and was an avid reader. He was a great fan of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes fiction as well as Shakespeare's plays.
He and his brother also spent many hours in the garage restoring Tom's Mercedes and other foreign cars.
Tom is survived by his sister Janet Freeman (Paul Solman), of Boston, and his brother Harold Freeman (Katherine Wieczorek), sister Frances (Michael) Myers and sister Margaret Scheid, all of Norwalk.
He is fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews, whom he entertained with patience, humor, and kindness: Rachel Viola, Joanna Noon, Dylan Freeman, Julie McCord, Scott Myers, Greg Myers, Ryan Myers, Megan Scheid, and Bill Scheid.
Burial, at Woodlawn Cemetery, will be private; a memorial service may be held in the new year. Arrangements are under the direction of Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk. Donations in Tom's memory may be made to the Norwalk Area Food Bank or the Norwalk Public Library.
